Skate park in £40,000 makeover

A skate park in Reading is set for a £40,000 makeover after youngsters helped secure part of the funding.

The facility at Clayfield Copse will feature more challenging jumps, twin banks and grind boxes with work due to be completed by the Christmas holidays.

Youngsters were asked for their views on their plans and helped secure £26,691 of the investment from the Youth Opportunities Fund.

The remainder of the cash will come from developers.

Councillor Pete Ruhemann, lead member for children's services at Reading Borough Council, said: "This is another great example of young people recognising a local need, doing their research, and making a case to the panel.

"The only thing they need to do now is enjoy."

New design for skate park shown

The winning design for a new skateboard park for Glastonbury in Somerset has been revealed.

The new park will be built next to the Morlands Enterprise Park at the same site as the previous one which had to be demolished for safety reasons.

The new park will include features such as a manual pad, mini ramp, stair set, rails, jump box and banks.

Mendip District Council awarded the £95,000 contract to Dorset-based company Maverick.

Councillor Alistair Glanvile, of Mendip District Council, said: "The winning design is the one that was preferred by most of the young people who came along to the consultations, and we are confident that in the new year a new park will be built which will be used by a wide range of people in the local communities."

Although planning permission has not yet been finalised, the council says it hopes the new park will be opened by the end of March.

The council's planning board will debate the issue on 17 December when a decision is expected to be made.

LaunLaunceston Xtreme Sports have now put in a MyPlace funding bid to enable construction and equipping of an extreme sports centre in Coronation Park.

The Xtreme Sports Centre will offer a safe, staffed environment, and opportunities for young people to engage in and develop their skills in extreme sports and multi-media arts all year round. The centre will offer a flexible use of space, and will have a varied programme of activities for all ages, abilities and gender, and will work closely with other youth service providers to improve the youth offer in the North Cornwall area. For sport, the project will offer indoor and outdoor facilities for skateboarding, mountain-boards, rollerblades and skates, with provision for BMX bikes. Indoor ramps will be movable to allow an arena space and creative sport layouts which may be easily altered to maintain interest, challenges, and address differing levels of abilities. The centre will offer informal sessions for users, with training facilities for beginners and those wishing to enhance their capabilities. The centre will cater for spectators, offering a viewing gallery and café with refreshments. Designs incorporate a multi-media studio, events arena, a number of smaller rooms to be used as offices, quiet zones, internet facilities, and studio space for other service providers.

The project will offer regular activities for local communities, and has been designed to high standards with the communities' needs at the heart of planning and architectural expertise. The project has been developed to comply with competition standards for Skateboarding and BMX, and will strive to become a world class facility, participating in regional and national events (with the UK Skateboarding Association). BMX is now an Olympic sport, and as such has already undergone an increase in interest, events and local recreation. We will make this an opportunity to really raise the profile of the sport to young people.
