Experts and youngsters have joined forces to design a skatepark of international standard for Hereford.
A meeting was held by the Real (sic.) Sport 4 Hereford group for young skaters, BMX riders and skateboaders from across the country on the planned skatepark They were joined by Jeremy Donaldson of Robert Dye Architects, who is a skateboarder himself, Christian Sayer, the Midlands representitive of the UK Skateboarding Association, and James Garner (sic.), a professional skateboarder from Hereford who is now based in London. Councillor Anna Toon, chairman (sic.) of Real Sport 4 Hereford, said: 'We wanted to liase with young people to give them the best faciilities. We've been told that the only other skatepark of this standard is in Milton Keynes, which has attracted visitors from as far afield as America as well as from up and down the UK.' The skatepark has been allocated £55,000 from Crest Nicholson, £10,000 by West Mercia Police, and £25,000 this year and £24,000 next year by Hereford City Council. Adittionially, the group has recieved £5,000 from the Lottery Funds for All, which was used to sponsor the design meeting as well as contributing towards designing the skatepark, consultation and the website. The group has also applied for £50,000 Lottery Funding but will not find out if it has been successful until the summer. Anna Toon said: 'More than 40 young people attended the meeting and it was a good opportunity to encourage them to work with us and to help us work with local police. Any donations or sponsorship from local businesses would be very much appreciated and we would like to hear from any special needs groups who would also like to get involved.'
