Mold skatepark is on hold due to the site being on a flood plain.
From the Evening Leader. Published Date: 30 May 2008 By Amy Illingworth PLANS for a skatepark are being held up after the proposed site was found to be on a flood plain. Mold Town Council voted to support a proposal to build a skateboarding facility on Kendricks Field, the site of an original proposal in 2006.
But at the request of the Environment Agency the application has been deferred for a Flood Consequence Assessment.
A spokesman for Environment Agency Wales said: "We have sent a letter to Flintshire local planning authority and copied to Mold Town Council recommending that the proposed skate park be deferred until a Flood Consequence Assessment (FCA) is carried out. "As with any development on a flood plain, we need to make sure that the developer understands and takes into account at the planning stage, that the land is liable to flood in the future.
"This is to make sure that people or properties on or off site, are not put at risk as a result of new development."
The spokesman added that the agency would not object to the skatepark if the assessment shows that the flood risk can be acceptably managed.
Any proposed development that lies within a flood zone, as defined by the Welsh Assembly Government, is subject a flood risk assessment.
Members of the town council were informed of the planning application at a meeting on Wednesday and it is currently out for public consultation.
More than 260 people signed a petition opposing the original plans in 2006, and nearly 40 letters of objection were sent to County Hall amid fears a skate park would attract anti-social behaviour and vandalism, and affect people's privacy.
The plans were rejected due to environmental health issues and after recently changing the design, the plans were resubmitted.
A group of 18 youngsters, who were fed up with not having a place to meet and skate, set up a Mold Skaters Association in 2005 and came up with the idea of a skate facility in Kendricks Field, Mold. |
