skate park success!

All the money needed for a new feature at a skate park has been secured.

Youngsters in Witham will be pleased to hear that a project to add another feature at the Spa Road skate park has attracted all of the £56,000 funding it needs.

In fact, after two funding requests were granted last month the project now has a slight surplus, with the money likely to go on additional litter bins and benches.

The cash means the bowl feature should be built in time for the summer, making the town’s skate park one of the best in the county.

Through the work of the youth council, particularly former councillor Sam Miller, and town councillor Lucy Barlow, various partners have agreed to contribute cash.

Witham Town Council has put £25,000 into the project, Witham Youth Council £758 and Essex County Council’s community initiative fund stumped up £25,000.

Essex Environment Trust agreed last month to put a final £5,500 towards the project and on March 24 Braintree councillors agreed to a grant application for £4,742.

Janet Money, Witham mayor, said improving the skate park, which opened in 2003, should be positive for youngsters in the town.

She said: “It will be good for the children, I just hope there are enough that are going to use it.

“It will keep teenagers busy and that’s the age group we need to do something for.”
