Plaza style skate park promised

A 'STREET plaza' style skate park could be the next addition at Stockingford Recreation Ground.

As exclusively revealed in the Evening News, plans are in the pipeline to build a skate park to complement the super-successful BMX track in Stockingford Recreation Ground in Nuneaton.

A blueprint of what the skatepark could look like has been unveiled and already Chris Watkins, chair of the Ford Residents Association who is championing the facility, has received some good feedback.

Now he is waiting on whether he can get the £100,000 funding he needs to pay for the skate park and has already sent off a letter asking for cash from SITA trust.

"The design is the sort of thing that we want to get for the rec," he said.

"It's going to be made out of concrete, not of steel or wood, so that it is smoother for the skaters, it's quieter and it will last longer. It is the street scene that the kids seem to like, they don't want half pipes any more, they want it to look more street.

"I have applied for one lot of funding from SITA and have others I need to write to, so it is really a case of wait and see now."

He said that word has already spread about the skate park plans and he has received an email from a local skater, who is over the moon with the proposals.

"PCSO Tracy Holmes put me in touch with some skaters from the town centre and I had an email back from one of them who said that they really like the design as it is a proper street plaza unlike the skate park at the Jubilee Centre," Mr Watkins said.

"He even says in the email that doing something like this shows that some people out there care for their future and are trying to provide something not just for him but also for people after him, that was so nice to hear."

Now Mr Watkins is keen to hear from other skaters in the area to see if they like the designs or would like to see any other features.

"There already seems to be a lot of good things said about this but I would like to hear from more people so that I can use it as evidence for the funders," he said.

"The BMX track has already been a big success, the amount of crime in the rec has halved since it was opened in the summer and if we can get the skate park too, then that should bring down crime even further and make a better life for everyone who lives in the area."
