From his California base, Wally Hollyday, worldclass skatepark builder is to fly to Lichfield to suss out the city.
Mr Hollyday is a legend to skateboaders worldwide with a legacy of groundbreaking designs across his native USA. It was determined by Lichfield Skatepark Committee to see the city get its own facility and they hope to commission the American designer.
A raft of early benefit gigs raised enough cash to pay for Mr Hollyday's flight to Britain and. The gigs have already proved worthwhile.
James Hemming, skatepark committee chairman said: "He is a world leader in the field - he's been doing this since 1978."
He also said: "We would like him to be the designer and builder of the eventual park when we have enough cash.
He stated: "It would be a world-class park and we think Lichfield deserves to have the very best."
For meetings with Lichfield District Council officers, MP Michael Fabricant and the public, on May 11, Mr Hollyday will fly into Birmingham International Airport.
Skaters will be given a worthwhile opportunity to meet and put questions to Mr Hollyday, who will be in the country for 3 days.
Lichfield Skatepark Committee hopes it may be confirmed as a spot in Beacon Park at Bunker's Hill, even though the site is not yet confirmed.
Mr Hemming said: "We should be announcing a definite site by May - we would like it to be in Beacon Park."
He also said: "And we hope that this thing will move very fast after that. Once you've got the site you can really start with the funding and make some serious applications.
He stated: "It is good that we held all the gigs earlier this year so we could pay for Wally's flight - we are very happy about his interest."
£600 was granted to the group recently to provide a portable skateboard ramp for a summer event at Minster Youth Club.
The LA Rock Cafe in Sandford Street was the venue for the benefit gig held on 26th April.
With support from Vigilante and The Reunions, it was headlined by Wild Youth.
There was also a raffle for a skateboard, T-shirt and hooded top. |
