Skaters and BMXers have somewhere new to practice their tricks and flicks after a new £62,000 skate park was opened in St Austell.Despite wet weather the park was officially opened last week with skaters and cyclists eager to try out the new equipment.
The new park is based at The Meadows, next to Bishop Bronescombe School, and has been completed by Groundwork Devon and Cornwall.
The charity worked with Restormel Borough Council and Sport England to set up the park and worked with 25 local skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMXers to design the park and its equipment.
Funding for the park was provided with £30,000 from Restormel and the other £32,000 was secured by Groundwork from Sport England.
The park was set up as part of a community project and included site visits and workshops to ensure that the park was exactly what was needed.
Councillor Roy Gill said that the project was "the best thing since sliced bread".
Bruce Hosie, Cornwall projects manager at Groundwork, said: "Working with young people and a professional skate park designer really helped to make this skate park a success."
The park was officially opened by Restormel council leader Tim Jones along with Cllr Gill and Cllr Susan Blaylock. Professionals from the charity Apollo 11 then showed off their skills in the park before offering some safety advice. To encourage more youngsters to play safe the charity gave a free skateboard to the only young person who went to the park with a safety helmet. |
